AGEISM: LET’S LOOK AT AGING DIFFERENTLY

Ageism today

Ageism toward older adults is pernicious. It leaves a mark, and it leaves traces. To break with this form of age discrimination, the first step is to recognize its manifestations and consequences.

Browse the different sections of this website to learn about:
  • What ageism is, the various forms it can take, and the reasons behind its presence;
  • The psychological, physiological and social consequences of ageism directed at older adults; and
  • The contexts where ageism is especially prevalent, namely in everyday life, in media representations, in workplaces, in health care and within individuals (toward themselves).

Moreover, addressing discrimination against older adults requires us to be aware of the words we use, of the fact that “being an older adult” is a cultural conception, a construction of our language, and not an objective fact. All of which raises a question: How can we talk about ageism without being ageist?

In this section, we take the first step toward breaking with ageism by seeking to understand it and ultimately change our perceptions.
