Monique Mathieu has spent many years immersed in First Nations communities, where she earned the nickname “Grandmother wolf.” Although she isn’t from a First Nation community herself, she’s been drawn to them all her life, and has discovered their quiet strength. In this photo, she is calm and serene, gliding through the mythical force that is in perfect harmony with the river’s current. Inspired by Grandmother wolf’s wisdom and immeasurable calm, Arianne suggested she visit the river to soak up the energy emanating from it.

“I feel beautiful, I am beautiful. I accept the signs of aging more and more all the time.” Grandmother wolf embraces her spirituality and philosophy of life centred on the symbolic—an emblem of wisdom and connection with oneself. She spoke openly to Arianne about her spirituality, her sexuality and her connection with herself, including physical, emotional, sensual and meaningful relationships. “At my age, authenticity and the truth are what matter most.” For her, taking part in the photo project was a chance to evoke the life ahead of her, to accept people’s differences and to enjoy every moment. “Growing old is a gift and an opportunity to gather my knowledge and share the wisdom I have acquired.”
